New Delhi: Every year on March 23, Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day is celebrated in honour of the freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar. The three freedom fighters are honoured on this day for the sacrifices they made to free the nation from British control.
Shaheed Diwas: History
Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day has a historical significance as it commemorates the day in 1931 when Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged to death during the struggle for India’s independence.
Mahatma Gandhi is also honoured on this day. The President and Prime Minister are among the ministers who honour the troops, and a two-minute silence is held in their honour.
