Sunil Chhetri Retires from National Team as India held 0-0 by Kuwait in World Cup Qualifiers

Kolkata: Indian football star and captain of the national team Sunil Chhetri bid farewell to his team and fans at the end of the World Cup Qualifiers match against Kuwait played at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday.

Chhetri took his time following the full-time whistle and thanked the fans for their tremendous support. The Indian national team stood and clapped for 39-year-old Chhetri as he lapped the stadium. He was given a guard of honour, which saw the skipper cry.

India and Kuwait battled it all out for ninety minutes but the game ended goalless. It was a major setback for India’s hopes to qualify for the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The team will face an uphill task of beating Qatar in a must-win final game on June 11 in their final game of the second round of qualifiers.
