Today Earth is Closest to Sun, Know What is Perihelion Day

January 3 is quite a remarkable day for our mother earth and all its inhabitants as on this day our planet is at its closest to the sun in 2024. This day is known as the Perihelion Day. The day when the earth is farthest away from the sun is called the Aphelion Day.

On Wednesday, the earth will be around 91.4 million miles from the sun. On this Perihelion day, the earth is at a distance of around 3 million miles nearer to the sun in comparison to the Aphelion Day.

Perihelion doesn’t always fall on the same day every year. It happens two weeks after the winter solstice, the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere.

Perihelion and Aphelion happen as the earth orbits around the earth in an elliptical orbit.
