Unemployment in India rose to 7.7% in October

Unemployment rate in India rose to 7.7 percent in October. Thsi has been revealed by a study made by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). Out of 25 States of the country, six states showed double-figure unemployment rate during this month, which is quite alarming.

Haryana had the highest unemployment rate of 31.8 percent, while Rajasthan’s unemployment rate was 30.7 percent. , Jammu & Kashmir at 22.4 percent, Jharkhand at 16.5 percent, Bihar 14.5 percent, and Tripura 10.5 percent also topped the chart of the unemployment rate. The lowest rate of unemployment during October was in Madhya Pradesh at 0.8 percent while Chattisgarh showed 0.9 percent unemployment.

The reason behind this sharp rise in unemployment in October is said to be because of the end of Kharif season. The dearth of agricultural activity increased joblessness in rural areas of most States in the country.

In September this year the unemployment rate in India was 6.43 percent. It was the lowest rate of unemployment recorded in the country in the past four years. But this joy was short-lived. Instead of getting down further, the unemployment rate displayed a rising trend in October. As per CMIE, the rural unemployment rate in September 5.84 percent, but it surged to 8.04 percent in October.

Usually, harvesting of Kharif crops ends in the first fortnight of October resulting in a fall in rural employment. It is hoped that rural employment as well as the overall employment rate of the country will increase when the sowing of winter crops starts by the end of November
