Fresh Low-Pressure Likely To Form Over BoB On May 22, Cyclone Threat Unclear Until May 24: IMD

Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is projected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, potentially intensifying into a depression over central Bay of Bengal by May 24. The likelihood of this system developing into a cyclone will be clearer after May 24, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar.

In its latest update, the IMD reported the southwest monsoon has progressed into parts of the Maldives, Comorin area, south Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and the south Andaman Sea.

The IMD’s mid-day bulletin revealed that maximum temperatures have dropped significantly in some areas of North Interior Odisha, while remaining relatively unchanged in other regions. Interior Odisha experienced markedly below-normal temperatures in isolated places, appreciably below-normal temperatures in a few areas, and below-normal temperatures elsewhere. Conversely, Coastal Odisha saw appreciably above-normal temperatures in some places and above-normal temperatures in a few other areas, with normal temperatures elsewhere.

Maximum daytime temperatures in Odisha are expected to gradually increase by 2°C to 4°C over the next five days. Yesterday, the highest recorded temperature was 39.5°C in Chandbali and Khordha, while Nuapada and Phulbani recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 22.0°C in the plains of Odisha.
