Odisha Govt Announces GST Exemption for ’12th Fail’ Movie to Boost Audience Engagement

Bhubaneswar: In a strategic move to boost cinema attendance, the Odisha government has declared a state Goods and Services Tax (GST) waiver for the film ’12th Fail.’ Directed by renowned filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the movie narrates the inspirational real-life journey of Manoj Sharma, a young boy from Chambal, and his transformation into an honest IPS officer of the 2005 batch in Maharashtra.

The Finance Department of Odisha issued an official order expressing the government’s intent to incentivize public interest in the film. The order stated, “In order to promote such a movie for greater interest, the Government is pleased to provide tax benefits to the above Hindi film to encourage the public to watch it in cinema theatres/multiplexes in the state.”

The film, starring Vikrant Massey in the lead role, focuses on the real-life account of Manoj Sharma’s transformation into an honest cop. The state GST waiver is expected to make the cinematic experience more accessible, ultimately encouraging a larger audience to witness the impactful narrative on the big screen.
