Former Odisha Speaker Maheswar Mohanty’s Mortal Remains Cremated with Reverence

Puri: The late former Speaker of Odisha, Maheswar Mohanty, was cremated in a solemn ceremony at Puri Swargadwara in the state, according to credible sources. It is noteworthy that the final rites for the esteemed Odisha Speaker, Maheswar Mohanty, were conducted with due reverence, and his elder son, Sunil Mohanty, was responsible for lighting the funeral pyre.

Maheswar Mohanty, who held the position of Speaker in the Odisha State Assembly, sadly passed away at 3:25 am in Bhubaneswar on a Tuesday, as reported by trusted sources. He had been under medical care at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar since November 1, 2023. Initially admitted to the Neurology department, his deteriorating health necessitated a transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Early in the morning today, his son confirmed his demise, and further comprehensive details are expected on this matter.

Mr. Maheswar Mohanty, a legal professional by vocation, obtained his LLB degree from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, he completed his MA in Political Science at Banaras Hindu University. Over the years, Mohanty established himself as a prominent political figure, winning the Puri Assembly Constituency seat an impressive five times. He held the position of Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) continuously from 1995 to 2014, initially winning as an MLA on the BJD ticket in 2000. However, he faced defeat in the year 2019.

Throughout his political career, Maheswar Mohanty played a pivotal role in Naveen Patnaik’s cabinet, holding various key ministries, including Panchayati Raj, Tourism and Culture, Law, and the Revenue department. His contributions extended to the role of Speaker of the Odisha Assembly from 2004 to 2008. Furthermore, Maheswar Mohanty served as the Chairman of Puri Municipality, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape.
