Argentina Clinches 16th Copa America Title With Extra-Time Win Over Colombia

Florida: In a thrilling Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium, Argentina secured their 16th championship with a 1-0 victory over Colombia. Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time goal, his fifth of the tournament, proved decisive in a match marred by security issues and a lengthy delay.

The triumph marks Argentina’s third consecutive major tournament win, following their 2021 Copa America success and 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar. However, the celebrations were bittersweet as captain Lionel Messi left the field injured in the 66th minute, visibly distraught on the sidelines.

The match began amid chaos, with organizers struggling to manage stadium entry. Once underway, both teams struggled to find their rhythm. Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba struck the post early on, while Messi tested Colombia’s keeper Camilo Vargas before his injury.

Angel Di Maria, in his final appearance for Argentina, showcased his skills but couldn’t break the deadlock. The second half saw few clear opportunities, with Nicolas Gonzalez having a goal disallowed for offside.

The winning moment came in extra time when Leandro Paredes won possession in midfield, initiating a swift move that culminated in Martinez’s clinical finish. For Colombia, whose sole Copa America title dates back to 2001, the night ended in disappointment.
