Security Concerns Cast Shadow on Pakistan Hosting Champions Trophy 2025

New Delhi/Dubai: The possibility of a hybrid model for hosting the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year remains under consideration, as India’s participation cannot be decided by the ICC if there is a government policy against it. Sources within the ICC executive board indicate that the decision on India’s involvement may not be finalized until closer to the tournament date.

The ongoing ICC board meeting in Dubai has sparked discussions regarding the upcoming Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March 2025. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi aims to engage with BCCI officials and ICC authorities to seek assurances.

Security concerns are a major factor, with India perceiving a higher threat than other touring teams. The recent successful Davis Cup visit offers a glimmer of hope, but the stakes are much higher with star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on the roster.

However, uncertainties persist as an ICC board member suggests that India’s participation could be contingent on government directives. Should the Indian government express reservations, alternative arrangements may need to be explored.

Nevertheless, there’s optimism that diplomatic efforts may mitigate apprehensions, considering past engagements between the two nations.

In the event of India’s non-participation, a hybrid model akin to the 2023 edition, where India played matches in Sri Lanka, could be adopted. The UAE emerges as a potential venue, boasting suitable infrastructure and favourable weather conditions for cricket in February and March.
