IMD Forecasts Formation of Low Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal Around August 18

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD’s Bhubaneswar regional centre, this low-pressure area is expected to develop over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal around August 18, 2023.

The IMD Bhubaneswar tweeted that a cyclonic circulation currently exists over the northeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal at various altitudes above sea level. This circulation is tilting southwards with height and is likely to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the northern Bay of Bengal by August 18.

Despite this prediction, the IMD has not yet issued any specific forecasts regarding the potential impact on rainfall activities resulting from this low-pressure area.

In a separate tweet, the IMD also shared information about the recent rainfall patterns in Odisha. From June 1 to August 16, 2023, the region recorded a seasonal cumulative rainfall of 673.0 mm. This value is below the normal value of 749.0 mm for this period. The IMD noted that out of 30 districts, 11 were experiencing deficient rainfall, 1 had received excess rainfall, and the remaining 18 were within the normal range.
