‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ Screened in Manipur, Breaking 20-Year Ban on Hindi Movies

Imphal: Cinema made a triumphant return to Manipur after more than two decades, as a Bollywood hit, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’, graced a makeshift open-air theatre in Churachandpur. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal, drew a sizable crowd in Rengkai (Lamka), marking a significant cinematic event in the region.

Organized by the Hmar Students’ Association, the screening aimed to challenge the prolonged ban on Hindi movies, which was initially imposed over 20 years ago in 2000 by the ‘Revolutionary People’s Front’. This organization serves as the political arm of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army.

A representative from the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, Ginza Vualzong, conveyed that this screening was a strong statement against the anti-national stance adopted by Meitei groups. The organization, representing the Kuki tribes, sought to express their affection for India in the face of these challenges.

Prior to the movie presentation, a poignant moment unfolded as the national anthem resonated through the open-air theatre, situated just 63 km away from the capital city. This gesture added a patriotic touch to the event, emphasizing the connection to the nation.

Notably, Manipur has recently grappled with a surge in ethnic conflicts, primarily between the Meitei majority and the Kuki tribal communities. These tensions have led to a tragic loss of life, with the death toll exceeding 160 individuals as of now.
