Iran Launches Over 300 Drones, Missiles in Retaliatory Strike on Israel

Jerusalem: In a significant escalation, Iran has launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory. The attack, occurring late on Saturday, triggered air raid sirens across Israel, with explosions heard as Israeli air defences intercepted incoming projectiles.

Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed that the Iranian assault involved over 300 drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. Fortunately, the majority were intercepted outside Israel’s borders with assistance from US and UK forces. However, some strikes hit targets within Israel, causing minor damage to a military base in the south.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack, citing retaliation for Israel’s alleged targeting of the Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1. The consulate strike resulted in 16 casualties, including 2 senior IRGC generals.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have been high, with Israeli leaders anticipating a direct response from Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s readiness, while Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Israel was closely monitoring threats from Iran and its allies.

This escalation follows six months of conflict between Israel and Gaza, extending tensions to Lebanon and Syria. The region witnessed increased hostilities, with long-range attacks originating from Yemen and Iraq.

In response to the Iranian threat, neighbouring countries temporarily closed their airspace, and Syria heightened defences around Damascus and key military installations.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian forces seized a container ship allegedly linked to Israel near the Strait of Hormuz.
