Odisha to Get Relief from Heatwave as Monsoon Advances

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to receive relief from the ongoing heatwave as the southwest monsoon advances further into the state, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Over the next 3-4 days, the monsoon is expected to extend into additional areas of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the northwest Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon arrived in Odisha on June 8, four days ahead of schedule, initially covering parts of Malkangiri district. However, its progress has been sluggish since then.

Despite the impending relief, a heatwave is likely to persist for the next two days due to dry north-westerly winds. Hot and humid conditions with thunderstorms are expected to continue until the end of the week. The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall for specific districts: Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur on June 13; Koraput, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Nabarangpur on June 14; and Ganjam, Gajapati, and Nayagarh on June 17.

From June 13-14, a heatwave may affect isolated areas in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Boudh, Sonepur, and Bargarh. Concurrently, hot and humid weather is anticipated in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati until June 17.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected on June 13 in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Angul, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Kendrapara, Sonepur, Balangir, Boudh, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Similar weather conditions are forecasted for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri in the following 24 hours.

Further thunderstorm activity with gusty winds is predicted for June 15 in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Angul, and Dhenkanal. On June 16, it will likely affect Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh, and Sonepur. The weather on June 17 will include similar conditions in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across various parts of the state over the subsequent two days, with no significant change in daytime temperatures anticipated during the next 3-4 days.
