Parliament Adjourned Till Monday Amid High Drama Over Adani Row

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till Monday minutes after resuming due to sloganeering by the Opposition seeking JPC in the Adani case.

Protests by opposition parties over Hindenburg Research’s report on Adani Group and other issues continued to disrupt the proceedings in both Houses of Parliament for the second consecutive day on Friday.

When the Lok Sabha met after the first adjournment at 2 PM, the scene was no different. Opposition members including Congress, DMK and TMC again trooped into the well, shouting slogans demanding Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the matter. The Presiding Officer urged the members to allow the House to take the scheduled business but the protesting members did not pay heed, leading to adjournment of the House for the day.

Earlier, when the House assembled for the day, opposition members from Congress, DMK, TMC, JD(U), Samajwadi Party and others trooped into the well over the issue. Members from BSP, TRS and CPI and others were also on their feet.

Amid the ruckus, Speaker Om Birla asked the protesting members to allow the House to take up the Question Hour as several important questions of different ministries are listed for the day. He said, disrupting the proceedings is against the sanctity of the House. He said the members should give prior notices on the issues they want to raise. As the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 PM.

In the Rajya Sabha, when the House met after the first adjournment at 2:30 PM, members from Congress, AAP and others trooped into the well raising slogans. Opposition members from TMC, DMK, Left and others were on their feet. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urged them to allow the House to function. He warned protesting members of action but they continued with their protest leading to adjournment of the House for the day.

In the morning, when the House assembled for the day, the Chairman disallowed the adjournment notices by members saying that the notices do not fulfil the laid down procedures. The members from Congress, DMK, AAP and others started raising slogans. The Chairman said, Parliament is a place of discussion and not a place for disruptions. He appealed to the members to maintain order in the House so that the listed business can be discussed. Amid the ruckus, the House was adjourned till 2:30 PM.
