Bhubaneswar’s First Natural Gas-Powered Crematorium Unveiled

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar has unveiled its first natural gas-powered crematorium, aimed at enhancing the cremation process. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha MP Aparajita Sarangi inaugurated the facility at Dharma Vihar in Khandagiri. Developed by GAIL India Limited, the crematorium features two natural gas-operated furnaces.

This innovative move aligns with efforts to enhance air quality and minimize carbon emissions through the utilization of natural gas for cremations. The new system is projected to reduce cremation time to approximately one hour, ensuring efficient processes. Maintenance responsibilities for the crematorium lie with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

GAIL’s significant role in constructing three natural gas-based crematoriums in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, costing Rs 16 crore, underscores their commitment to sustainable practices. Following the inauguration in Khandagiri, two more crematoriums with natural gas furnaces are set to open shortly in Aiginia, Bhubaneswar, and Khan Nagar, Cuttack.
