47 Dead, Hundreds Trapped in Kerala’s Wayanad; Army, Airforce Called in

Wayanad: At least 47 people have died and hundreds are feared to be trapped after massive landslides struck the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday morning.

Multiple agencies, including the NDRF, Army and the Air Force have been deployed for rescue operations. Two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), have also been put into service.

Villages like Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha were worst affected by the landslide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured him of all the help from the Centre to deal with the crisis.

Rescue operations are being slowed down due to incessant rain.

In a statement, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “All possible rescue operations will be coordinated on the landslides in Wayanad.”

In an X post, the Prime Minister said, “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured.”

In an X post, Rahul Gandhi said, “I am deeply anguished by the massive landslides near Meppadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. I hope those still trapped are brought to safety soon.”

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in northern districts of Kerala for Tuesday. This area includes Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. Tourists and locals have been advised to be alert and take precautions in the wake of heavy rain.
