Bridges in Srinagar to be Fenced to Prevent Suicides

Srinagar: The Srinagar administration in Jammu and Kashmir has ordered the fencing of several bridges in the city to check suicides.

In the recent past people have jumped into the Jhelum river from these bridges to commit suicide.

The order involves raising the height of the parapets of the bridges or adding a human-sized fence, reported The Telegraph.

Several bridges in Srinagar are termed “suicide points”.

Srinagar deputy commissioner Dr Bilal Mohi-ud-din Bhat on Wednesday said the process of fencing the sides of various bridges had started.

The fencing the Srinagar’s Nawa Kadal and Fateh Kadal bridges will be done at a cost Rs 19 lakh. Similarly, a detailed project report (DPR) of Rs 9 lakh, Rs 29 lakh and Rs 11 lakh has been prepared for Gow Kadal, Safa Kadal and Qamarwari bridges in Srinagar.

In July, three youths jumped into the Jhelum river from several Srinagar. On Wednesday, a teenage girl jumped from the Habba Kadal bridge.
