All-Women BSF Unit Exchanges Sweets with BGB on I-Day, Marking Historic First Along Indo-B’desh Border

Nadia: In a historic first, an all-women unit of the Border Security Force (BSF) participated in a ceremonial exchange of sweets and greetings with female personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal.

The event took place near the Gede border post in Nadia district as part of the traditional Independence Day celebrations.

The six-member BSF team, part of the 32nd battalion stationed in the area, donned ceremonial attire for the occasion. The BGB women’s team represented the 6th battalion, based at the Darshana border post on the Bangladeshi side.

BSF Commandant Sujeet Kumar highlighted the significance of the exchange, stating that it symbolizes mutual respect and camaraderie between the two forces. “This is the first time that women personnel from both sides have performed this tradition, reinforcing strong bilateral ties,” he said.

The exchange of sweets and greetings between the two border forces is a longstanding tradition observed during national and religious festivals such as Independence Day, Republic Day, Deepawali and Eid.

However, this marks the first instance where an all-women contingent has carried out the gesture along the 4,096 km-long border.
