New Delhi: The Union finance ministry on Thursday informed that there are no restrictions for persons of the LGBTQ community to open a joint bank account as well as to nominate a person in a queer relationship as a nominee.
In an advisory dated August 28, the finance ministry said, this is to clarify that there are no restrictions for persons of the queer community to open a joint bank account and also to nominate a person in queer relationship as a nominee to receive the balance in the account in the event of the account holder.
The advisory of the finance ministry for the Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT community) came in view of the Supreme Court order dated October 17, 2023, in the case of Supriyo@Supriya Chakraborty and another vs Union of India.
“This is to clarify that there are no restrictions for persons of the queer community to open a joint bank account and also to nominate a person in a queer relationship as a nominee to receive the balance in the account in the event of the account holder,” read the advisory.
