Heated India-Pakistan ACT Hockey Match Sees Players Spar Over Controversial Tackle

Hulunbuir (China): India concluded their league stage campaign at the Asian Champions Trophy in Hulunbuir, China, with an unbeaten record, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Pakistan on Saturday. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who had earlier reached the milestone of 200 goals, scored both of India’s goals.

This win ensured India remained atop the group stage points table. Pakistan, despite their first loss in the tournament after two wins and two draws, also advanced to the semifinals.

The match was marred by tension, notably a heated clash between Indian player Jugraj Singh and Pakistan’s Ashraf Waheed Rana. The incident occurred with 10 minutes left, as Pakistan sought an equaliser. Following a tackle by Rana, a verbal altercation ensued, involving players from both teams. The on-field umpires, along with Pakistan’s captain Ammad Butt and other players, intervened to diffuse the situation. After reviewing the incident, the TV umpire issued a yellow card to Rana, leaving Pakistan with a man down for the remainder of the match.

In the dying moments, India had a chance to extend their lead when Sukhjeet won a penalty corner. However, Harmanpreet’s attempt was blocked. Despite the loss, Pakistan joined India in the semifinals.

India’s victory continues their dominance over Pakistan, having defeated them 10-2 at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year and 4-0 in the Chennai edition of the ACT. Earlier, at the Asia Cup in Jakarta (2022), India held Pakistan to a 1-1 draw and won 4-3 at the 2021 ACT in Dhaka to secure the bronze medal.
