Central Govt Investigating Death of EY India Employee Due to ‘Excess Workload’

The Central government on Thursday informed that it was probing the circumstances that led to the death of a 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who was serving the Ernst and Young India.

The death of the CA allegedly due to excessive work pressure has evoked a massive outrage on social media when a heart rendering letter written by the mother of the woman from Pune to the head of Ernst & Young India went viral.

In a post on X, the Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje, said, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Anna Sebastian Perayil. We are committed to ensuring justice and the Labour Ministry has officially taken up the complaint.”

A thorough investigation into the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment was underway, she added, while responding to a post by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

The former Union Minister also sought an investigation into her family’s allegations of an exploitative work environment at Ernst and Young India.

Anna Sebastian Perayil joined the E&Y in March 2024. She died on July 20 at a Pune hospital, where she was admitted after complaining exhaustion.

This incident came to the fore, when a letter written by her mother Anita Augustine to EY’s India head went viral.

In the letter, the Pune woman descibed how her daughter was allegedly under extreme work pressure, which in turn affected her health and ultimately led to her death. She also mentioned that no one from E&Y attended her daughter’s funeral.

In a statement, E&Y India assured the company would work towards providing a healthy workplace.
