Tim Southee Steps Down as New Zealand Test Captain, Tom Latham to Lead Against India

Tim Southee has relinquished his role as New Zealand’s Test captain ahead of their upcoming three-Test series against India. Tom Latham has been named as his successor.

Southee, who led the Kiwis in 14 Tests, managed six wins, six losses and two draws during his tenure. The veteran pacer explained his decision in a statement from New Zealand Cricket, stating, “I’ve always prioritised the team and feel this is the best decision moving forward. My focus will now be on my on-field performances to help New Zealand win more matches.”

The 35-year-old pacer, with 382 wickets in 102 Tests, is New Zealand’s second-highest wicket-taker after Sir Richard Hadlee (431 wickets). Apart from Tests, he has represented New Zealand in 161 ODIs and 126 T20Is.

Southee reaffirmed his support for Latham and the younger bowlers emerging into the international fold, adding, “Tom has my full backing, and I will continue to assist the team in any way I can.”

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead commended Southee’s leadership, highlighting his team-first mentality. “Tim has been a great leader and remains a crucial part of our Test side moving forward. His humility in stepping down shows his commitment to the team’s future,” Stead said.

Southee took over the captaincy from Kane Williamson in December 2022. New Zealand are currently touring the subcontinent, having played a two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with a one-off Test against Afghanistan being washed out. The series against India starts on October 16 in Bengaluru, followed by Tests in Pune and Mumbai.
