New Delhi: The government has no proposal to make six airbags mandatory for cars, said Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday.
In 2022, the Union government proposed to implement the six airbags safety norms from October 2023 to enhance the safety of people traveling in cars by amending the Central Motors Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.
But speaking at an event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Gadkari said, “We don’t want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory.”
Airbags for both front seats are mandatory in vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021. An airbag prevents serious injuries during an accident.
