Amidst Soured Relations Canada Postpones Trade Mission to India

New Delhi: Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng postponed the trade mission to India scheduled in October.

This hinted at the soured diplomatic relations between the two countries after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded his Canadian counterpart at a G20 summit in New Delhi regarding rising Khalistani anti-India activities in Canada.

PM Modi did not hold any bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and snubbing him only allowed for an informal meeting on the sidelines of G20 Summit five days ago.

Canada with the highest population of Sikhs outside Punjab in India has become a breeding ground for anti-India Khalistani activities. Many temples in Canada have also been vandalized in Canada. This has irked India.

On Friday, India said it had paused trade talks with Canada. Around four months ago the two nations said they aimed to seal an initial trade agreement this year.
