ASI Starts Ground Penetrating Radar Survey at Konark Sun Temple

Bhubaneswar: In an attempt to discover the habitational profile of the Sun temple complex at Konark, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Monday took up a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey the support of National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) of Hyderabad.

During the survey, ground penetrating scanning of up to 15m was done through the radio waves. ASI is planning to take up excavation, if any stone structure is found under the soil around the sun temple.

A three-member team of experts are involved in the survey that will continue for two days.

This GPR survey would reveal the habitational level, water contour and other details of the area. According to historical literature, around 20 temples existed around the Konark Sun temple.

As per reports, two structures are suspected to be revealed by the GPR survey.
