Bahanaga Train Accident: 3 Accused Railway Staff Sent to Judicial Custody

Bhubaneswar: Following the end of their CBI remand, the three arrested railway officials in the Bahanaga triple train accident were sent to judicial custody by a special court in Bhubaneswar. The next date of hearing of their case is on July 27.

The three arrested accused, senior section engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, section engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar have been suspended by the Railways. After the end of their remand period, they were produced before the CBI Special Court on Friday. CBI arrested them on July 7.

The special court had granted five-day remand of the accused to the CBI. On July 11, the court extended the remand period for four more days.

The three accused were booked under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence), and under Section 153 of the Railways Act.

As many as 293 people were killed and over 1,200 were injured in the triple train accident that involved the Coromandel Express, a stationary goods train and Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, on June 2 at Bahanaga railway station.
