Ex-Bangladesh Cricketer Mashrafe Mortaza’s House Set On Fire By Protesters: Reports

Dhaka: In a dramatic escalation of political unrest in Bangladesh, protesters have reportedly torched the residence of former cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. The violence erupted following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country on Monday.

Mortaza, a prominent figure in Bangladeshi cricket and now a Member of Parliament for the Narail-2 constituency, has seen his home targeted by miscreants amid the chaos. The attack occurred after Hasina, who led the Awami League, fled the country in response to widespread student protests.

Mortaza, who captained Bangladesh in 117 international matches and amassed 390 wickets and nearly 3,000 runs across formats, transitioned into politics in 2018. As an MP, he has been actively involved in the Awami League’s initiatives.

In addition to Mortaza’s property, the District Awami League office and the residence of its President, Subash Chandra Bose, were also vandalised and set on fire by the rioters. The violence culminated in the storming and vandalism of Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence in Dhaka.

Hasina landed at Hindon Air Base near Delhi on Monday evening, aboard a Bangladesh Air Force military plane. Reports suggest she is scheduled to depart for London soon.
