Bangladeshi Police End Weeklong Strike; Start Patrolling Capital Dhaka

Ending their weeklong strike, Bangladeshi police resumed patrols of the capital Dhaka on Monday.

According to reports, the Bangladesh police force agreed to return to work after late-night talks with the new interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

After the abrupt fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, Bangladesh police faced attacks and arson. Following it, the police personnel started an indefinite strike.

The police personnel in Bangladesh had declared that they will not resume law and order work until their safety on duty was guaranteed.

During past one month, around 450 of Bangladesh’s 600 police stations faced attacks and arson, according to the national police union.

In the police’s absence, the student protestors acted as traffic wardens, formed overnight neighbourhood watch patrols and guarded Hindu temples and other places of worship.
