17 Students Face Disciplinary Action Over Berhampur University Ragging Incident

Berhampur: In a crucial update regarding the alleged ragging case at Berhampur University, Vice-Chancellor Geetanjali Dash has confirmed that disciplinary actions have been initiated against 17 students involved in the incident.

Reports indicate that four students were expelled from the hostel due to their direct participation in the ragging activities. Meanwhile, 13 other students were fined ₹1,000 each and required to submit written undertakings as part of the disciplinary measures.

The expelled students have been given one week to vacate the hostel premises.

The incident took place on September 21, when a group of second-year students from a different hostel reportedly harassed and ragged first-year students residing in a newly allocated hostel. In response, the first-year students lodged a formal complaint with the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Anti-Ragging Cell.

A 12-member anti-ragging committee, assisted by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), conducted an investigation into the matter. Students implicated in the ragging were identified using CCTV footage.
