Case Against Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra for Route Diversion in Assam

Guwahati: The Assam Police registered a case against Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and its organiser KB Byju for alleged violation of the state government’s guidelines regarding the yatra route.

According to the Assam Police, the organisers of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra changed the scheduled route and took a non-charted path as it passed through Jorhat town on Thursday afternoon.

The police added that the organisers, including KB Byjiu and others, allegedly incited the crowd to break traffic barricades and assaulted the on-duty police officers. Assam Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said, this FIR was a tactic to create unnecessary obstacles before the yatra.

“There was no police manning the traffic diversion at the PWD point. The assigned route was too small and we had a huge gathering. So, we took a detour for just a few metres. Himanta Biswa Sarma is scared of the yatra’s success on the first day (in Assam) and now wants to derail it,” he added.

Meanwhile, as the yatra entered its sixth day on Friday, Rahul Gandhi along with other yatra members took a ferry to the largest river island, Majuli.

The yatra will continue to pass through Assam until January 25, covering a distance of 833 km across 17 districts. The yatra was launched from Manipur on January 14 and will conclude on March 20 in Mumbai traversing 6,713 km over 67 days, through 110 districts across 15 states.
