Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: CBI Rules Out Gangrape, Names Sanjay Roy as Sole Accused

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ruled out gangrape in the death of a Kolkata doctor last month, concluding that only Sanjay Roy, who has been arrested, was involved in the rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital, according to reports.

The investigation, which was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, is in its final stages. The CBI is expected to file charges soon.

Chief Minister Banerjee, facing pressure from political rivals and civil society, has questioned the CBI’s progress, saying the case has dragged on without updates. She had initially requested five days for the state police to investigate before the case was transferred.

State Minister Bratya Basu has also demanded a detailed progress report from the CBI, accusing them of a lack of transparency compared to when the Kolkata Police were handling the case.

The CBI has reportedly submitted DNA evidence from the accused to experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The final report from AIIMS will play a crucial role in concluding the investigation.

The CBI has made three arrests, including Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was taken into custody for alleged financial irregularities, unrelated to the rape-murder case.

Dr Ghosh, who resigned following the incident, faces charges based on a petition from a former hospital official, Akhtar Ali, accusing him of corruption and misconduct.

In connection with the case, the CBI conducted raids at Dr Ghosh’s residence in Kolkata. The agency has recorded over 100 statements and conducted multiple polygraph tests but found no evidence of others being involved in the doctor’s rape and murder.

The CBI is set to submit a status report to the Calcutta High Court on September 17.

The case has sparked widespread protests, with medical professionals, activists and opposition parties demanding justice. Allegations of conspiracy, police cover-up and gangrape have surfaced, though the authorities have refuted these claims.

The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud presiding over the case.
