Centre to Transform Odisha into Premier Tourism Hub: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced the central government’s commitment to developing Odisha into a premier tourism destination during her Union Budget 2024 presentation.

Highlighting tourism’s deep roots in Indian civilization, Sitharaman emphasized the sector’s potential to generate jobs, attract investments, and boost economic growth.

Odisha’s rich heritage—encompassing scenic landscapes, ancient temples, monuments, skilled craftsmanship, wildlife sanctuaries, and pristine beaches—positions it as an ideal tourism hotspot. The Centre will extend support for the enhancement and promotion of these attractions.

Sitharaman also stressed the spiritual significance of Vishnupath Temple in Gaya and Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, announcing plans to develop corridors modelled after the successful Kashi Vishwanath corridor, aiming to elevate them to world-class tourist sites.

Additionally, the Finance Minister revealed a comprehensive development initiative for Rajgir and Nalanda in Bihar, aiming to enhance their appeal and infrastructure for tourists.
