EX-DU Professor GN Saibaba Acquitted in Maoist Link Case by Bombay HC

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday acquitted former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba in a Maoist link case. The High Court also acquitted five other accused in the case. Saibaba, who is wheelchair-bound, has been paralyzed from the waist down since childhood. He was arrested in May 2014 and charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for alleged links to Maoist leader Ganapathy.

Saibaba taught English literature at Ram Lal Anand College of Delhi University.

Saibaba and others were convicted by a Nagpur sessions court in 2017, which was challenged in the Bombay High Court.

The Bombay High Court scrapped the sessions court verdict and acquitted the former DU professor and five others.

Pronouncing the judgement, a bench of justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes set aside the 2017 verdict, saying the prosecution could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
