Eye Specialist Taking Bribe for Cataract Surgery Arrested in Subarnapur Dist

Bhubaneswar: Dr Sanjib Kumar Kar, an ophthalmologist posted at the Subarnapur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) was caught red-handed by vigilance officials while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,500 from a complainant to conduct cataract surgery for his uncle.

Cataract surgeries are done free of cost in government hospitals in Odisha, yet the eye specialist, Dr Kar was allegedly demanding bribes from patients for doing the surgery.

The complainant being a poor man wanted Dr Kar to perform cataract surgery of his ailing aged uncle, in the government hospital free of cost. Despite all requests, Dr Kar did not agree to perform the cataract surgery without getting the bribe amount beforehand.

Finding no other way, the complainant informed the Odisha Vigilance Department. The vigilance sleuths set a trap and nabbed Dr Kar while he was accepting the bribe from the complainant.

Simultaneous searches were taken up at three locations related to Dr Kar in Balangir and Subarnapur districts to unearth disproportionate assets of the erring doctor.
