Former Bihar MP Sentenced Life Imprisonment in 1995 Double Murder Case by SC

New Delhi: Former RJD MP Prabhunath Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment in a 1995 double murder case by the Supreme Court on Friday.

Singh was found guilty of shooting down two persons in 1995, for allegedly voting against him. The apex court termed the case as an “exceptionally painful episode of our criminal justice system”.

On August 18, a Supreme Court bench convicted Singh of the offences under Sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The bench awarded the former MP a life term on Friday. The Supreme Court also directed the Bihar government to provide Rs 10 lakh as ex-gratia to the families of both victims.

Prabhunath Singh was a member of the 12th, 13th and 14th Lok Sabha.

The 1995 double murder case involved the killing of two people on the day of polling for assembly elections in Chapra in Bihar’s Saran district in March 1995.
