World Cup 2023: Hardik Pandya’s Return Delayed; BCCI Provides Crucial Medical Update

Mumbai: Ace India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, currently recovering from an ankle injury, is unlikely to make a comeback until the World Cup match against the Netherlands on November 12. Pandya sustained a left ankle injury while fielding during the game against Bangladesh on October 19, which forced him to miss subsequent matches against New Zealand and England. He is also expected to sit out for the upcoming fixtures against Sri Lanka on Thursday and South Africa on November 5.

India’s final league match is scheduled against the Netherlands in Bengaluru on November 12. A BCCI source mentioned that Pandya’s injury is a minor tear, and he is on the path to recovery, with the possibility of returning for the last league game or even directly featuring in the semifinals. With India’s impressive record of six consecutive wins, they are almost certain for the semifinals.

In Pandya’s absence, the team had to make adjustments, opting for a playing eleven with five bowlers, while Suryakumar Yadav stepped in to bat at the sixth position. Although Mohammad Shami has been in excellent form, Pandya’s all-round abilities are still vital to maintaining the team’s balance.

Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey had expressed optimism regarding Pandya’s imminent return after India’s victory over England. Pandya has been undergoing his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The medical team has been closely monitoring his progress and coordinating with the NCA, with hopes of providing an update in the coming days.

According to a BCCI media release, Pandya was initially expected to rejoin the team in Lucknow ahead of the England game, but he was not present with the squad at that time.
