Kanhaiya Kumar to Contest from Delhi as Congress Candidate

New Delhi: The former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar will contest from Northeast Delhi as a Congress candidate. The Congress on Sunday cleared his candidature.

Kumar started his political career with the CPI. He is now in charge of the Congress party’s students’ wing, the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

As he was elbowed out of his home state of Bihar by Congress ally RJD, Kumar was chosen by the Congress to contest from Northeast Delhi.

With Kumar, the Congress wants to tap into the sizeable Bihari vote in Northeast Delhi.

In 2019, Kumar had contested the last Lok Sabha elections as a CPI candidate from Begusarai in Bihar. He lost to Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh of the BJP.

The Congress has also selected the candidates for the two other seats it is contesting in Delhi as part of an electoral arrangement with the Aam Aadmi Party. Udit Raj will be the Congress candidate from Northwest Delhi. J.P. Aggarwal has been selected for Chandni Chowk.
