Mass Nesting of Olive Ridleys Starts at Gahirmatha

Bhubaneswar: Annual mass nesting of Olive ridley marine turtles has started at the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

It is expected that lakhs of them will be thronging the Gahirmatha beach to lay eggs in the next couple of days.

Taking to his personal ‘X’ handle, the PCCF (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda wrote, “The splendid phenomenon of mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles at Gahirmatha has begun. Lakhs of them will be visiting our beach to lay eggs in next couple of days. Department is fully geared up to ensure safety of our annual visitors.”

On the Odisha coast, mass nesting of Olive ridleys occurs at Gahirmatha, Rushikulya river mouth coast in Ganjam district and at the beach near Devi river mouth in Puri district.
