Odisha’s First Liver Transplant Conducted at SCB Medical College and Hospital

Cuttack: For the first time in the medical history of Odisha, a liver transplant was conducted at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCB MCH) in Cuttack. A portion of the liver of a woman was transplanted to her husband at this hospital on Wednesday.

The donor was a woman from the Tigiria area in Cuttack district. The operation was carried out by a nine-member team of doctors from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad and SCB.

The liver transplant surgical process continued for eight hours from 8 am till 4 pm on Wednesday at the special modular operation theatre at the trauma building on the hospital premises.

According to the SCB authorities, the condition of the transplanted patient is stable. Two third part of the liver from the donor was transplanted to the recipient during the complicated operation. The liver of the recipient was extracted as it was completely damaged.

After the operation, the donor will live with one-third of her liver. Her liver will grow again and come back to the normal shape after four to five months.
