Opposition Leaders Lead ‘Hit with Footwear’ Protest in Mumbai Over Shivaji Statue Collapse

Mumbai: Top leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, including Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray and Nana Patole have spearheaded a major protest in Mumbai, demanding accountability for the collapse of the 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in Malvan, Sindhudurg. The protest, termed “Jode Maro” or “hit with footwear,” has seen a significant turnout, with security measures heightened by the Eknath Shinde government.

Authorities have mobilised a large contingent of police at the Gateway of India, which has been closed to tourists for security reasons. In response, the ruling BJP has organised its own march to counter the opposition’s demonstration.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) has emphasised the protest’s aim to honour Shivaji Maharaj and revive Maharashtra’s pride, while Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction has condemned those responsible for the statue’s collapse. The Congress party has condemned the “shoddy work” and alleged corruption in the project.

The statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just eight months ago, collapsed under controversial circumstances, sparking intense political fallout. The Navy, in coordination with the state government, managed the project. Following the collapse, the police have arrested the project’s structural consultant and contractor on charges including attempt to murder and culpable homicide.

In light of the controversy, Prime Minister Modi issued a public apology, acknowledging the statue’s collapse as a significant issue and expressing remorse to the people and to Shivaji Maharaj.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis accused the opposition of exploiting the issue for political gain, asserting that Congress and NCP leaders have also neglected Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy. BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye challenged the opposition’s sincerity and questioned whether their protests would extend to other issues.
