Onion Auction Resumes in Nashik After 13 Day Strike by Onion Traders

Nashik: Onion traders ended their 13-day-long strike and the auction of onion resumed in all APMCs in Nashik on Tuesday morning. This means the onion price will not rise much during the coming festive season.

An estimated 75,000-80,000 quintals of onions are likely to be auctioned off on Tuesday, which comes to around half the usual quota of daily trading at these APMCs.

The Nashik District Onion Traders Association took the decision to end their strike “in the interest of the farmers, who have been badly hit by the 13-day strike, as well as to allay fear of a shortage and price hike in the retail markets.

But the onion traders have given one month time to the government to fulfill their demands and if these are not met, they have threatened to restart their strike again.

Onion traders had a series of meetings with the Maharashtra government and the Centre in the past one week to find out a solution, but there was no amicable outcome.
