Over 50 Injured in Fresh Clashes in Dhaka Between Students, Paramilitary Personnel

Bangladesh capital Dhaka experienced another spurt of violence on Sunday night as students clashed with hundreds of protesting paramilitary personnel demanding job regularisation. According to The Daily Star of Bangladesh, at least 50 people were injured in this violent clash.

The clashes began around 9:20 pm near the Secretariat. The Dhaka University students gathered up near the secretariat in Dhaka after a news made rounds that that the personnel of the Ansar, a paramilitary auxiliary force, had detained several students, including Nahid Islam, a student leader and adviser in the caretaker government.

The students tried to disperse the Ansar agitators. Both groups threw bricks and chased each other during the clash. Police and army personnel had to intervene to control the situation.

The students alleged the Ansar members as “agents of autocracy,” according to Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier in the day, Ansar members ended their protest after receiving assurances from Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the interim government’s adviser for home affairs. The members had been demonstrating for two days, calling for the nationalization of their jobs.
