Asaduddin Owaisi’s ‘Jai Palestine’ Slogan During Oath Expunged from Parliament Records

New Delhi: In a heated session of the 18th Lok Sabha, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s slogans during his oath-taking ceremony were expunged from Parliament records.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when BJP MPs chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ as Owaisi approached to take his oath in Urdu, concluding with a contentious slogan.

Radha Mohan Singh, who was presiding at the time, assured that any utterance beyond the formal oath would be omitted from the official records. Pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab reaffirmed that all slogans by newly elected MPs during the ceremony would be expunged.

Owaisi, now a five-time Lok Sabha MP, later took to social media, stating his commitment to advocating for India’s marginalised communities. He won the Hyderabad seat in the 2024 election, defeating BJP candidate Madhavi Latha by 3.3 lakh votes.

Amid the uproar, Owaisi defended his slogan, challenging critics to cite any constitutional provision that prohibited his words. In contrast, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned Owaisi’s actions as contradictory to the Constitution, accusing him of exposing his true intentions.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju added that while the House does not support or oppose any country, invoking another nation’s name is inappropriate in Parliament.
