Qatar Accepts India’s Appeal Against Death Sentence to 8 Former Navy Personnel

New Delhi: A court in Qatar accepted India’s appeal against the capital punishment verdict for eight former Indian Navy personnel.

These former Indian Navy personnel were sentenced to death by a Qatari court in October in an alleged spying case. According to sources, after examining the Indian appeal, the Qatari court will set a hearing date for the case.

These eight Indian Navy veterans were arrested in August 2022. They include Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar. All of them have served at least two decades in the Indian Navy.
