Thailand Passes Landmark Bill Recognizing Same-Sex Marriage

The senate of Thailand passed a landmark bill recognizing

a marriage equality law on Tuesday. This bill will pave the path for the country to become the third nation in Asia. The other two countries recognizing same-sex couples are Nepal and Taiwan.

The law gained the support of nearly all upper house lawmakers. It now needs the royal approval. The law will come into force 120 days after it is published in the royal gazette.

LGBTQ+ activists praised the move terming it a “monumental step forward” as it would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to enact marriage equality legislation.

Thailand is already famous for its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and tolerance, making it a popular destination for tourists.
