US Sanctuary wants to Import Crocodiles from India

Phoenix Herpetological Society, which manages the United States’ largest reptile bank in Arizona, has requested the US federal government to import six gharials as well as six mugger crocodiles from Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in Tamil Nadu.

The Phoenix Herpetological Society has applied for crocodile import permission to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The American federal government has asked for public opinion in this regard under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as the Phoenix Herpetological Society has claimed that import of these crocs from India will help in their preservation. People are requested to send in their opinion regarding it by August 16.

As per this notification, the Phoenix Herpetological Society wants permission to import three male and three female captive-bred gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) and three male and three female captive-bred mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris kimbula and Crocodylus palustris palustris) from Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in Tamil Nadu.
