Wild Elephant Tramples Farmer to Death in Sundargarh

Sundargarh: A farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Gargadbahal village under the Baragaon forest range in Sundargarh district in the early morning on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Hiralal Behera of Gargadbahal village.

According to locals, hearing about a herd of wild elephants in his field, at around 3.30 am Hiralal rushed there to save his standing crop.

A herd of 30 wild elephants roaming near his village had started to damage his paddy crop.

During his attempt to shoo away the wild elephants, Hiralal came face to face with a tusker. The pachyderm lifted the farmer with its trunk and trampled him. Hiralal died on the spot.

On receiving information, the forest officials rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. Forest officials are making efforts to drive away the wild elephant herd from the vicinity of human habitats.
