Telecom Dept Issues Advisory Against Fake Calls Threatening Mobile Disconnection

New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a crucial advisory to citizens today regarding a concerning trend of fraudulent calls impersonating DoT officials. These calls threaten individuals with mobile number disconnection, alleging involvement in illegal activities. Additionally, there’s a warning about WhatsApp calls from foreign numbers, particularly starting with the country code 92, posing as government representatives to deceive people.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Communications, cybercriminals are employing these tactics to coerce individuals into disclosing personal information, facilitating cybercrime and financial fraud. The DoT emphasizes that it does not endorse such calls and urges citizens to exercise caution, refraining from sharing any personal data upon receiving such calls.

To combat this issue, the DoT advises citizens to promptly report incidents of cybercrime or financial fraud to the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or through the official website www.cybercrime.gov.in. Proactive reporting aids the DoT in safeguarding against the misuse of telecom resources for illicit activities.

Moreover, citizens are encouraged to utilize the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify mobile connections under their name. Any unauthorized or unnecessary connections should be reported immediately.
