Bhubaneswar: A 35-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of raping a woman doctor two years back by the Additional District Sessions Judge in Odisha’s Angul on Thursday.
The convict Sukanta Behera was found guilty under Sections 376 (1) and 450 of the IPC.
According to the chargesheet filed against him, he was involved in the rape of a woman doctor posted at the Chhendipada Community Health Centre (CHC) on June 29, 2021 night.
The doctor had ordered for dinner from a nearby hotel. Sukanta, the son of the hotel owner delivered the food at the official quarters of the woman doctor. But finding her alone in the house, Sukanta raped her and also threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone.
But the victim preferred to register a complaint against the man at the Chhendipada police station, which led to the arrest of Sukanta.
The court examined 11 witnesses and other evidence to convict Sukanta in this rape case under Section 376 (1) of the IPC. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 on him. Non-payment of the penalty would invite jail term for an additional one year, he added. The convict was also awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 10,000 under Section 450 of the IPC. Both jail terms will run concurrently.
