Youth Arrested for Duping 904 Families of Missing Persons

New Delhi: A 28-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly cheating 904 families of missing persons through false promises of sharing location and providing basic necessities to those missing.

The accused identified as Shyamsunder Chauhan from Uttar Pradesh’s Ranipur Mau, was collecting family details of missing persons from the online portals of the government agencies for his cheating.

He was arrested following a complaint lodged at the Wazirabad police station on November 15 regarding a missing girl. The victim’s family received a call from a person, who demanded money to tell the location of the girl. The man on the phone sent a QR code to the girl’s father to cheat Rs 8,000 from him.

Investigation led to the arrest of the accused in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau. It was found that the accused had used the same modus operandi to dupe 904 families across Delhi.

The accused was downloading information about the missing person from the ZIPNet (Zonal Integrated Police Network) and other government websites. He was then contacting the phone numbers of the family members of those missing.

The cheat was also pretending to be having the missing person in his custody.
